Not all of your family may want to be in your business. It was easy for us to want Lauren to be a part of our business because she was bright, a hard worker, and never took anything for granted. At first, we had hoped she would work somewhere else for five to 10 years to gain management and leadership experience in a different organization. If children in the family are not capable of learning, handling the day-to-day tasks required of running or being a part of your family business, let them know early and directly that they do not have what it takes to be a part of the company. Realize also that your children may have dreams of their own which don’t include being a part of your company. Allow them wings and celebrate their individual choices.
